Mental Health’s Magic Pill

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning & nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” -Mark Twain

Basically means, get your ass out of bed and do something hard.

If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness.

Luckily, I have always been active and eaten healthy. But used to do it for the wrong reasons.

I have fallen victim to the same things. I will talk about them in this week’s newsletter. Since last week was mental health week, I thought it would be a good topic.

I used to workout and stay active to impress others, not myself. It’s a nasty trap that you need to escape.

Now I do things different. Yes, I still want to feel and look good. But I don’t workout, eat healthy and stay active for a 6pack. I do them for how it makes me mentally feel afterward.

My routine of sauna, cold-plunge, working out multiple times a day does so much for me mentally that I’m addicted to the feeling.

Everything ancillary that comes with being consistent is just a bonus.

The thoughts between my ears is the #1 priority in my life.

Imagine we could wake up and take a pill. It is revolutionary. It promises a longer, happier, and stronger life.

Increases your mood, concentration, energy levels. It would be groundbreaking and change the face of medicine.

It’s called exercise.

Luckily it already exists, its just not in a pill.

Our mental health is completely controlled by our brain chemistry. What type of foods we eat, how we sleep, ect.

Our brains never want to go to the gym for how it makes us feel mentally. It’s always because of an external factor, such as how do I lose weight, how do I get a fat ass, or how do I get a six pack.

Our brains are stuck in other people’s social media highlight-reels. This is due to social comparison.

They’re not even real. Just snapshots in time.

Focus on appearance is insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

You know what the harsh truth is, nobody gives a shit what you look like. If you have abs, or skinny legs.

They care that you’re present and confident.

That you’re alive and fun.

That you’re jumping in photos with your parents and swimming with your kids. That you’re still around to watch your kids grow up.

Our goal has never been to have the fat loss, its the happiness that we think it will bring us if we achieve it.

Human willpower is highest right when we wake up. That’s why its harder to go workout the longer the day goes on.

When you start with exercise at the beginning of your day, your mental capacity to handle stress almost triples.

Our brains recognize exercise as a period of stress which tells our brain to go into a fight or fight response.

Our brains create two crucial chemicals.

Endorphins- Minimizes discomfort, blocks pain and gives us feelings of pleasure.

BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) – Clears your mind and helps you make positive decisions.

These are the physiologically reasons that exercise makes us feel so good. These chemicals are highly addictive like morphine and heroine, except they’re good for you.

Find something to do that starts your day that sets the tone for the rest of the day.

A morning ritual can be anything as simple as walking your dog and going outside.

The gym is for the mind more than the body.

Working out to have a nice-looking body is overrated. Vanity is such a stupid goal to chase.

I go to the gym now to workout my mind. It’s the place where pain makes me experience an insane amount of creativity.

My mind gets stronger after every visit.

It makes my mind into a fortress that’s hard for weak minds to penetrate with their weaker comments.

If haters or critics upset you. Remember, nobody criticizes people who are actually doing something with their life. I’d feel bad for them.

At a moment’s notice everything can be taken away.

One of my best friends recently took his own life out of nowhere. He was that happiest guy, so full of energy and positivity. Nobody close to him knew what he was battling or going through.

Everything can change in a heartbeat.

So why not try to feel the best you can. We don’t know when it’s our turn to go.

If it’s not a priority today, it’s never gonna happen.

What matters is scheduled today.

Everything else is a fantasy. I don’t care about what I’m going to do anymore. My calendar reveals the truth.

The harsh reality is most of us can’t handle more than one big priority at a time. So why do we try to manage conflicting priorities?

Remember: It’s today or never. Stop fooling yourself.

How can we achieve health and happiness without falling into the comparisons?

Stop being so hard on ourselves.

I hate my arms. I’m too fat. I’m too old (notice this and ask yourself if you would say this to your mother. If you wouldn’t, don’t say it to yourself.)

Find something you enjoy and do more of it.

The most consistent people find exercise they actually enjoy.

Mix things up.

If you like to dance, then go dance. If you like long walks, get to walking.

Set performance goals, not on a scale.

Don’t measure weight as progress, it means nothing. Muscle is more than fat.

Every time i’ve let myself get out of shape, I know I’m getting leaner cause I feel it, but the weight on the scale ALWAYS goes up before it goes down.

Measure it on the progress you’re making on whatever YOUR doing.

Maybe this week you were only active 2 days. Next week make it 3.

Make the time non-negotiable

Ignoring your own health because you’re focused on everybody else, kids, boss, etc.

Take 30 minutes a day to do something. You owe it to yourself. Everyone has 30 minutes.

Make It apart of your schedule.

You have to fall in love the way it makes us feel, instead of how it makes us look.

Exercise is the happiness hack.

The only people who care about you in your life don’t care what you look like and how much you weigh.

They only care that you are happy, healthy, and strong.

That’s it for this week.

Thanks for taking time out of your day and reading.
